白月光 White Moonlight
白月光 White Moonlight
by 张信哲 Jeff Chang
白月光 心里某个地方
White moonlight, somewhere in the heart
那么亮 却那么冰凉
So bright, yet so cold
每个人 都有一段悲伤
Every person has a chapter of sorrow
想隐藏 却欲盖弥彰
Wanting to conceal, yet revealing the more they try to hide
白月光 照天涯的两端
White moonlight, illuminating the two ends of the world
在心上 却不在身旁
In my heart, yet not beside me
擦不干 你当时的泪光
Your tears from that time are unable to be dried
路太长 追不回原谅
The road is too long, unable to chase back forgiveness
你是我 不能言说的伤
You are the sorrow that I can't say with words
想遗忘 又忍不住回想
Wanting to forget yet can't help but to recall
像流亡 一路跌跌撞撞
Like an exile, swaying and staggering along
你的綑绑 无法释放
Unable to be freed from your bondage
白月光 照天涯的两端
White moonlight, illuminating the two ends of the world
越圆满 越觉得孤单
The more full it becomes, the more lonely it feels
擦不干 回忆里的泪光
Unable to be dried, the tears from those memories
路太长 怎么补偿
The road is too long, how can I make amends
白月光 心里某个地方
White moonlight, somewhere in the heart
那么亮 却那么冰凉
So bright, yet so cold
每个人 都有一段悲伤
Every person has a chapter of sorrow
想隐藏 却在生长
Wanting to conceal, yet only continuing to grow.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Notes:
欲盖弥彰
(Idiom meaning the more one tries to hide, the more it becomes exposed)
却不在身旁
(Technically just means 'not beside [the person/body]', but I can't make it sound less awkward without adding a pronoun.)
P.S. Apparently the song name comes from a phrase used in a novel called 《红玫瑰与白玫瑰》"Red Rose, White Rose" by 张爱玲 Eileen Chang and it was so nice I wanted to add it on:
“也许每一个男子全都有过这样的两个女人,至少两个。娶了红玫瑰,久而久之,红的变了墙上的一抹蚊子血,白的还是"床前明月光";娶了白玫瑰,白的便是衣服上沾的一粒饭黏子,红的却是心口上一颗朱砂痣。”
"Maybe every man has once had these two kinds of women, at least two. If he marries the red rose, as time passes, the red becomes a smear of mosquito blood on the wall and the white is still the bright moonlight at the head of his bed. If he marries the white rose, the white then is a grain of rice stuck onto his clothes while the red is a vermilion beauty mark on his heart."
