The Lonely Northern Hemisphere
The Lonely Northern Hemisphere
by 林依晨 Ariel Lin
Using your 'good morning' to accompany my dinner
Remember to put all your longing into a piggy bank
I look up at the sky full of twinkling stars
Hearing the cowherd say to the weaver girl: Have courage
Don't worry about being on opposite ends of the earth
Looking at your greetings riding a magic carpet
Flying, using the speed of light to fly to where I am
You've let me see that the North Star has the Southern Cross for company
Without your arm to use a pillow, I'm still not very used to it
Your telescope can't see the loneliness of the Northern Hemisphere
The tides of the Pacific Ocean follows the Earth as it rotates around
I will patiently wait for the day you come close to the shore
Without your embrace to use as a toasty furnace, I'm still not very used to it
You can't see from the photo I emailed you the loneliness of the Northern Hemisphere
If the world had two hearts then we could share the warmth with each other
I won't be lazy in missing you
All of my dreams I'll give to you to keep safe
------------------------------------------------------------------
Notes
扑满 - a kind of earthenware money box
(This is connected to the next line, as in your greetings are riding a magic carpet using the speed of light to fly to where I am)
(Reference to the legend of the Qixi Festival, a kind of Chinese Valentine's Day about lovers in the night sky who can only meet once a year represented by the stars Altair and Vega)
North Star, Polarious
十字星 - lit. cross shaped star, the Crux, Southern Cross
(Usually you can't see both the North Star and the Southern Cross in one sky because they appear in two different hemispheres. The exception I learned today is in the parts of the hemispheres close to the equator.)
(Kind of hard to translate this one because 真心 means sincere or heartfelt, but the use of 颗 as a counter implies two real hearts. Then 再大 means bigger, so if the world had two even bigger real hearts, then we/it could warm each other. I kind of just gave up and went with whatever sounded okay )
